It was Halloween 2000. Darkness began
to fall on our not so haunted house. We had always wanted to do a
Haunted house but alas it was too late this year. Then I thought all is
not lost. Being a lighting designer I do have quite a few special
effects here at the house. So a special effect here , a spot light
there. Mix in some scary music and the Apopka Halloween House was born.
Just from the hour or so of work we put in the response was very
positive...

Hernando Heritage Museum
Stringer House
John May bought the property in 1855.
In 1856 he donated 15 acres to the county as a county
seat. Mr. May lived in the house with his wife, Marena,
and their daughter. After their deaths (his wife during
child birth and his daughter at age 3) he remained for
awhile and remarried, but eventually moved. The house
was sold to Dr. Sheldon Stringer, who added on a room
for his patients and added a special exit out of that
room so the patients would not disturb his family.
Jessie May was the daughter of John and Marena May. She
was born in the house which is now the Hernando Heritage
Museum. She also died there, when she was about 3 1/2
years old. Numerous people over the years have heard her
crying for her mother. The docents have noticed that
toys on display in the dining room area have been moved
into the foyer or placed in different positions in front
of the fireplace. On more than one occasion toys have
been rearranged by a volunteer to be displayed on the
floor in front of one of the fireplaces. This is done
right before the museum doors are locked for the night.
When the volunteer returns the next morning, the toys
are arranged in a different way from how they had left
them! Now, docents think that perhaps Jessie doesn't
always like the way they are arranged, and fixes them to
her liking! Right before one Mother's Day Tea the
docents had displayed two teacups on the small table in
front of the wood mantle. The next day there were three
cups , and the day after there was four. The cups had
been moved from the china cabinet to the table and no
one knew by whom! Both Jessie and her mother are buried
on the grounds of the museum, however there are no
markers to indicate where. Jessie was the daughter of
John and Marena May. She died when she was about 3 and a
half years old. One day recently, a volunteer came in
about 7:30 in the morning, long before the museum was to
open at the noon hour. She heard loud noises in the
attic. The strange thing was this volunteer knew nobody
else was in the house! She suspects that Jessie was
upset to be disturbed so early. Also, sometimes on
windy days, you can hear a faint, sad voice calling
"Mommy....Mommy". It may be the wind whistling through
the rafters. Or, it could be poor Jessie, calling for
her lost mother.

10/26: Old Town’s Safe Trick-or-Treat
event 2pm-6pm. Bring the kids and visit the Old Town merchants for candy
Enjoy a delightfully frightening, old-fashioned haunted house rising
from the dead center of Old Town.
Legend has it that in 1886 this elaborate Victorian estate was
constructed in the swamp for the Grimm family. The impressive residence
housed the Grimm’s funeral business until, finally, in 1929, the family
succumbed to their son’s growing insanity, the stock market crash and
their butler’s penchant for murder.
One hundred years after its construction, Old Town grew up around the
old Grimm house and its terrifying reputation. Fearful of unleashing the
home’s spirits if they tore the place down, the Old Town council decided
in 1993 to open the house to the public with the warning that they would
not be responsible for what might happen to anyone inside its 4,000
“scare” feet of winding corridors and wicked rooms. Fortunately, not one
guest has been reported lost to the two-story, 20-room house, although
there have been some close calls.

attraction in West Volusia County. Get your ticket and be prepared to find
yourself face to face with bizarre creatures and the undead. This is

Nightmare Manor
Story
Nightmare Manor was built in
1762 in Bucharest, Romania. The large greystone
structure was built of the salvaged remants of Count von
Turk's castle that had been burned to the ground . Count
von Turk was killed in the fire & all that was left of
the castle was the greystone blocks. While being
constructed several workers suffered various accidents &
one worker died after falling from the rooftop. The
manor was occupied for many years by the various
nobility of Romania. In the late 1920's, The Romanian
goverment had a new residence built for its nobility &
Nightmare Manor was scheduled to be destroyed. At the
time of the demolition, workers reported hearing &
seeing that they could not describe. After these
unexplained events, the workers believed the mansion was
haunted & refused to continue the demolition. Many
believe that spirits haunt the hall of this once proud
place.
A wealthy American by the name of Martin Trowbridge
bought the manor & brought with him a crew to carefully
disassemble each piece of the Nightmare Manor have it
shipped back to the US. He settled on Pensacola because
of its close proximity to his thriving lumber business.
The manor was transported piece by piece on a ship to
Pensacola. The construction of the manor didn't go as
smoothly as Mr. Trowbridge had hoped for. The manor was
to be put back together directly behind the family
cementary. This was known locally as the Dead End
Cemetary. While building the house workers reported hear
screams & moans comming from some of the famous
greystone blocks. This frightned the locals & made the
construction of the manor slow considerably. The manor
was finally reassembled at its current location of 5530
Glass Drive somewhere on or around 1932.
Ten years later the lumber industry crumbled & Mr.
Trowbridge retreated to the confines of Nightmare Manor.
As his wealth dwindled, he became more & more of a
recluse. Many of the local folk said that the thought of
losing his fortune had driven Mr. Trowbridge to the
breaking point. He was said to have went on a murder
spree, killing all of the staff & then hanging himself
in the study. The manor was purchased several times but
no one has ever been able to stay in it for very long.
According to local legend the ghosts of all the staff
still haunt the halls of this once glorious mansion. It
is said that you can sometimes even see the ghost of Mr,
Trowbridge walking the halls of his home looking for his
next victim. If you are up to it you can visit & take a
tour of this historic manor & its grounds. Just be
carefull & don't stray to far from your tourguide you
might not make it out alive.

Hellview
Cemetery
Hellview Cemetery has
existed for over 2000 years. No one knows how many are buried here. Some
say it is an ancient battlefield. Some claim it is simply cursed ground.
All that is known is that the dead are not quiet in Hellview. Those that
walk here tread on unhallowed ground.
Recently a black hearted
captain and his crewe lost their pirate ship into the mists of Ravenloft

14th Annual Halloween Howl
October 24-25, 2008
Members: $8 adults/$6 children (4-15)
Nonmembers: $10 adults/$8 children (4-15)
The goblins and ghosts will be out, lurking around the
grounds at the Tallahassee Museum. This frightening good time will begin
at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. each night of this two-day event.
Activities will abound throughout the grounds. For the younger children
we have a less frightening “children’s” trail as well as tricks and
treats on our 1880s farmstead, carnival-type games throughout the
grounds, costume contests and much, much more. There’s a haunted trail
for younger goblins and the Museum’s famous haunted trail for veterans
ghouls where a surprise lurks around each turn. This family event is a
haunting, howling good time with its haunted trails for adults and
children, tricks and treats, live music and things that go bump in the
night.

(What do you get when you mix an
experienced haunt designer, a motion picture production studio, a
twisted storyline and scores of motion picture savvy teens? Answer? One
very frightening Halloween event!
Early in 2006, George Colavecchio, well-known South Florida Haunted
Event designer (A Haunting Experience - downtown West Palm Beach,
Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds, Bloodlines -
Tallahassee, FL) joined forces with the students and staff of
G-Star School of the Arts for Motion Picture and Television Production
to begin planning the school's largest fund-raising event!
Undertaken in the form
of a voluntary class, students under the tutelage of Mr. Colavecchio,
began the rigorous task of producing a premier Halloween event one step
at a time. Student involvement began with the design and planning and
continues through prop building, setup, lighting
effects, staffing and - finally - the
event itself. The result will be a 17,000 square foot haunted production
both entertaining to visitors and professional in nature. Guaranteed to
raise funds - AND your heart rate!
Almost 50 years after
it's unexplained closing, the doors of Death Mask Studios once again
stand open. 17,000 sq. ft. of Haunted Motion Picture Studio. What waits
within? Relax, after all, it's only the movies - or is it?
