Halloween at Cranes Roost is a community
oriented door to door trick-or-treat alternative
for kids, sponsored by the City of Altamonte
Springs. The 14th Annual Halloween event
features local businesses sponsoring booths to
hand out candy and trinkets to an estimated
15,000 kids. There are costume contests for all
ages, inflatable games and live entertainment.
The event kicks off at 5pm with
trick-or-treating around Cranes Roost Lake, and
live entertainment in the Eddie Rose
Amphitheater. The costume contests begin at 6pm
in the Amphitheater with the youngest ages on
stage first. Food and beverages will be
available for purchase throughout the venue. No
coolers or pets are permitted in the park during
this event. Co-Sponsored by
AT&T the Real Yellow Pages, The Altamonte
Springs Police Department and MIX 105.
It was Halloween 2000. Darkness began
to fall on our not so haunted house. We had always wanted to do a
Haunted house but alas it was too late this year. Then I thought all is
not lost. Being a lighting designer I do have quite a few special
effects here at the house. So a special effect here , a spot light
there. Mix in some scary music and the Apopka Halloween House was born.
Just from the hour or so of work we put in the response was very
positive...

Brooksville
Hernando
Heritage Museum
Stringer House
John May bought the property in 1855.
In 1856 he donated 15 acres to the county as a county seat. Mr. May
lived in the house with his wife, Marena, and their daughter. After
their deaths (his wife during child birth and his daughter at age 3) he
remained for awhile and remarried, but eventually moved. The house was
sold to Dr. Sheldon Stringer, who added on a room for his patients and
added a special exit out of that room so the patients would not disturb
his family. Jessie May was the daughter of John and Marena May. She was
born in the house which is now the Hernando Heritage Museum. She also
died there, when she was about 3 1/2 years old. Numerous people over the
years have heard her crying for her mother. The docents have noticed
that toys on display in the dining room area have been moved into the
foyer or placed in different positions in front of the fireplace. On
more than one occasion toys have been rearranged by a volunteer to be
displayed on the floor in front of one of the fireplaces. This is done
right before the museum doors are locked for the night. When the
volunteer returns the next morning, the toys are arranged in a different
way from how they had left them! Now, docents think that perhaps Jessie
doesn't always like the way they are arranged, and fixes them to her
liking! Right before one Mother's Day Tea the docents had displayed two
teacups on the small table in front of the wood mantle. The next day
there were three cups , and the day after there was four. The cups had
been moved from the china cabinet to the table and no one knew by whom!
Both Jessie and her mother are buried on the grounds of the museum,
however there are no markers to indicate where. Jessie was the daughter
of John and Marena May. She died when she was about 3 and a half years
old. One day recently, a volunteer came in about 7:30 in the morning,
long before the museum was to open at the noon hour. She heard loud
noises in the attic. The strange thing was this volunteer knew nobody
else was in the house! She suspects that Jessie was upset to be
disturbed so early. Also, sometimes on windy days, you can hear a
faint, sad voice calling "Mommy....Mommy". It may be the wind whistling
through the rafters. Or, it could be poor Jessie, calling for her lost
mother.

In the Fall of 1962, a school busload of children were on a field trip
to the local Humane Society. Unknown at the time, the bus driver had a
history of mental illness. Authorities now believe he
intentionally drove the bus into a nearby lake. Tragically, all of the
children, their teacher and the driver were trapped inside as the bus
quickly sank to the bottom of the lake. Unfortunately, there were no
survivors. Due to the depth of the lake, all attempts to retrieve the
bus from the bottom of the lake failed. For the past 47 years, the bus
with the bodies inside has remained at the bottom of the lake, until
now....
Terror Trail 2009 has added more screams and scares with over 600 feet
of NEW trail. New thrills include: "THE SWAMP", "THE BUTCHER SHOP" and
"THE SCHOOL BUS". We have improved the "CLOWN CAVE" making it twice as
long and added 6,500 watts of strobe lights.

Tallahassee
15th Annual Halloween Howl
October 23 & 24
6-10pm
For Halloween, the Tallahassee Museum transforms its 52-acre
compound into a wicked wilderness of haunted trails, eye-popping
wonderments and theatrical mischief that will leave you howling
for more. It’s Halloween Howl, set for Oct. 23 and 24, with fun
and frights for all ages.
The Museum dares the bravest of souls to venture down its
hair-raising haunted trail through the dark woods. The
fright-night extravaganzas there are produced with
blood-curdling detail by people just dying to scare you – all in
fun, of course. The terror continues in the Monster Maze, bigger
this year than ever, where there is no telling what you’ll run
into – or what will run into you -- while wandering lost in its
labyrinth of passages.
The not-so-spooky amusements include a trail for prekindergarten
children that will feature some wonderful photo opportunities
and the imaginative Wizards Alley, featuring familiar monsters,
a fortune teller, a kooky candy store, craft booths, and a
chance to get close to some of the wizard’s critters. Still more
inventive Halloween fun awaits on the pioneer farmstead. All
ages also will enjoy the carnival games, costume contests, a
scarecrow contest, live music, and gobs of candy.
If fright makes you hungry, don’t worry. There will be plenty of
popular foods and beverages at the Trail Break Café. AT&T/The
Real Yellow Pages will have trick-or-treat bags at the ready
(but supplies are limited), and don’t forget to get your
glow-in-the-dark items at the Museum store or at its booth on
the grounds.
The Museum will have two lines open for non-members to get the
fun started as quickly as possible, and there will be a special
entrance by the caboose for members and for guests who want to
become members. (Please join! It’s a great family value.)
All this thrilling family fun comes at a very affordable cost.
For members: $8 adults, $6 children ages 4-15. For non-members:
$10 adults, $8 children ages 4-15. Free for children 3 and
younger.

Ybor City
Guavaween and Guavaween Family
FunFest 2009
Saturday - October 31
This Latin-style celebration is held
each year in Tampa's historic Ybor City which is known
more for its cigars than its guavas. The legendary story
behind the celebration is as much fun as the celebration
itself.
Long ago, Tampa pioneer Gavino
Gutierrez tried to cultivate guava commercially, but was
unsuccessful. However, it is noted that a local
newspaper columnist was successful in planting the idea
that if New York is the "Big Apple," then it follows
that Tampa must be the "Big Guava." So, for seventeen
years the mythical Mama Guava has lead her followers in
the Mama Guava Stumble Parade.
This huge street party draws more than
100,000 people. The all day fun for all ages fills the
streets between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Party goers not
only enjoy the parade, but a costume party and concerts.
After 3:00 p.m. Mama Guava welcomes her adult revelers
and the party last long into the wee hours of the
morning. So, take the "bore" out of Ybor City and join
the celebration!
To join the festivities take I-275 to
I-4 east or I-75 to I-4 west. Exit I-4 at 21st Street
(Exit #1 South) or take the Lee Roy Selmon (Crosstown)
Expressway to 22nd Street (Exit #9 North).
